Seeking their 23rd national title, Fort Lewis College Cycling heads to Asheville, NC January 5th-11th to contest the 2016 USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships of Cyclocross (CX). The Skyhawks will start competition Friday the 8th at 10am with the Division 1 Men’s race, then at 1:20pm the Division 1 Women race. The main objective- the Team Omnium title where each collegiate race is scored then totaled to determine the overall team points leader. With that said, FLC has a few riders that can compete for the win and that goes a long way for Team Omnium points. Then on Saturday at 10:45am, the very important Collegiate 4×4 Team Relay that counts towards the Team Omnium takes place. The relay pits 1 rider from each 3-4 person team doing one lap of the ~2 mile course all out with females completing at least 2 laps to determine the fastest team. The Skyhawks finished 2nd in last years Relay.
Fort Lewis has won two CX national championships in the past, 19 x D1 Mountain Bike, 1 x D2 Road title and had many individual National Champions in all disciplines.
Sofia Gomez Villafane returns as the Skyhawks top female CX racer. She had a disappointing 2015 Collegiate D1 race in Austin, TX and is looking to return to the podium, if not the top step. On the Men’s side the ‘Hawks are deep, with 6 returning members of last year’s CX Nats squad. Seniors Cody Cupp, Kolben Preble and Payson McElveen have been riding very well of late and Sophomore Ian McPherson has a podium spot well within his sights.
