Fort Lewis College Cycling has chosen the team that will represent the Skyhawks at the upcoming 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate BMX Nationals this weekend, March 10-12, at Cajun Nationals in Monroe, LA. The team will be looking to improve on its 3rd place overall at last year’s competition in Louisville, KY. BMX Coach Jordan Rupe has been working with a core group of BMX student athletes since September.
The team is led by Senior Rebeccah Sheppard and Sophomore Hayden Raymond while Senior Taylor Whitworth and Sophomore Jacob Reese will make an impact. With snow on the Durango BMX track since December the team has been doing their training in the weight room, parking lots and even some miles on the rollers in the office, but have also been able to get four weekends of racing with solid results in Greeley, Phoenix and Albuquerque to prepare for Nationals – everyone is on very good form. With such good preparation the Skyhawks are ready to compete against USA Cycling Collegiate Division 1 Varsity perennial BMX powerhouses Marian University and Lindsay Wilson College.
There will be a 2-day format to determine Collegiate BMX individual and team champions. A complete round of qualifiers and finals will be run each day with the individual winners being determined by a combination of both day’s points. Team points are then determined by combining the points of the top three riders from each team, ranked based off that total and given a second set of points to give a score for the team then adding the score from each day’s race for the team overall.
There are a few ways to keep up with the team before and during the competitions. The team’s Facebook page will have daily photos, results and reports – http://www.facebook.com/FLCCyclingTeam or follow on Twitter – @FLCCYCLING. The complete schedule, official results and reports can be found on http://usacycling.org.
