What is FLC Cycling?
Considering our rich history of Nationals Championships, Cycling is a Club Sport at Fort Lewis, but the Administration sees the value in the club, has invested in its sustainability and now operate under the Athletic Department.
FLC Cycling Club attracts some of the best young talent in the country, but many club members have shown up to FLC with a bike and helmet and want to be involved, ANYONE CAN JOIN. There is some club sports paperwork to fill out, you must have health insurance, get a physical, and pay $200 per term in dues per term and you’re in.
There are 3 categories of racing and on any given weekend take 20-50 racers to one of 20 events we travel to a year. There are usually about 8 MTB races in the spring, we run a weekly CX series and travel to CX Nats and there are about 9 Road racing weekends in the spring. The track season is very early in the year so we have Track athletes come in early and head up to Colorado Springs for training (there is also a 200 meter dirt track near Durango that should be ready to go in the summer of 2009) and then head to Collegiate Track Nationals in mid-September.
FLC Cycling also has the best infrastructure to help anyone achieve their cycling goals - whether it be the Olympics or just wanting to be a better rider. There are 2 full time staff members, a Head Coach and a Team Manager, that make the program run like a well oiled machine. The current Head Coach is Matt Shriver - he is a FLC Cycling alumni, was part of many Team National Championships and a few individual titles in MTB, TTT and CX. He has most recently raced for the Jittery Joes Road and CX Team and is the 2 time winner of BC Superweek against world class racers Chris Horner and Sven Tuft. The Team manager is Dave Hagen who has worked with the program for 6 years and has it dialed.
All this traveling takes money and the Club is funded by a mix of FLC Administration, Student Fees, Club Dues, Corporate Partners, and Booster Club.
