Fort Lewis College Cycling and Passion Productions has whipped up the 3rd annual Hermosa Creek Off-Road Classic mountain bike race on Saturday August 1st! Come one, come all, to race on the high country trail that made Durango famous. Starting at the Lower Hermosa Trailhead there is a 38 mile course for Pro/Semi Men and Women and Singlespeed A, a choice of either the 38 or 20 mile courses for the Expert Men and Woman and 20 miles for other classes and Singlespeed B. Race sponsors have kicked in some great prizes – cash for the top 3 Pro Men/ Women and top 3 Singlespeed A Men/Women and great products for the other classes! The icing on the cake will be the post-race BBQ/Campout hosted by the Durango Cyclery (Food and entertainment) held at the Upper Hermosa Trailhead. Proceeds go to the Fort Lewis College Cycling Team and Bicycle Lemonade.

 For 2009 the race is a test-event for the Singlespeed World Championships to be held in Durango on September 19th, 2009. The race is also part of the San Juan Trifecta series of races along with the CT Classic and the Bear Creek Beatdown.

All are invited to stay for the post-race campout/bbq at the Upper Hermosa Trailhead for some commraderie and entertainment - you can even camp out up there Friday night before the race.

 Cost of the event is $35. Pre-registration will be available Friday, July 31 from 5-8pm at the Upper Hermosa Trailhead. Race day registration will be at the Lower Hermosa parking lot from 7-8:30am. Racing starts at 9am.

 Organizers would like to notify racers and other trail users that the race-course starts at the Lower Hermosa Trail Parking Lot and use the Hermosa Trail (TR 514) to the Upper Hermosa Trailhead. The extended loop will continue onto Hermosa Park Road (FR 578), Hotel Draw Road (FR 550), 1 mile of the Colorado Trail (TR 520) and the Corral Draw Trail (TR 521) before returning to the Upper Hermosa Trailhead for the finish. The camping areas at the Upper Hermosa Trailhead are reserved for the racers/spectators and families Friday 7/31 through Sunday 8/2.

The Fort Lewis College Cycling Team/Durango Wheel Club will hold the annual Squawker Road Classic events April 11-12th in and around Durango and the Fort Lewis College Campus. The race is part of the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference season and will also have USA Cycling Open Categories.

 The action will begin Saturday morning with the “Bread/ East Animas TTT and ITT.” Team and Individual Time Trial races start at 8:00am at Core Value Fitness Center at the intersection of CR 250 and 32nd St.. Collegiate four person teams will start at one minute intervals and USA Cycling category individuals will start at 9am at 30 second intervals, finishing on CR250A before the DSNGRR tracks. 

There may be short delays at CR252/CR250 and CR250/CR250A intersections to allow racers to pass. Racing will finish by 10:00am.

Racing action will continue Saturday April 11 at 11:00am with the “Morehart Neighborhood Criterium” taking place in the historic downtown residential area. The course is a fast spectator friendly circuit utilizing 4th, 5th, and 6th Avenues as well as 8th, 9th, and 10th streets. Racing will end at 6pm.

The criterium course will be completely closed to traffic from 10am-6pm on Saturday, April 11th.

Racing concludes on Sunday, April 12 with the “Coca-Cola Road Race,” starting at 7:00am at the Education/Business Hall on Rim Drive. Will continue on North Rim Drive (CR239), turn right on North College/Goeglein Gulch Road (CR238), and right on East 8th Avenue back to Rim Drive, completing circle. Racing will finish by 4:00pm.

Minor traffic delays can be expected during the road race on N. College Drive – it will be requested that anyone needing access to/from the residences/businesses affected by the course use North College Drive – this is for the safety of the participants. 8th Avenue will be closed from College Dr. to the stoplight on campus from 7am to 4pm
